Shirley was born on November 6, 1935, in St Louis, MO, the third child of Ervin and Ivy (Hassler)Dowler. She moved to Shelbyville with her family in 1948, graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1953. She married Robert Largent on July 4, 1953 and accompanied him as he served in the military. The couple returned to Shelbyville in 1958 where they spent the rest of their married life. Robert passed away in November of 1999. She married Jim Tate of Ramsey in June of 2005. He passed away in September of 2008.

Shirley was a devoted wife and mother as well as a celebrated seamstress and interior decorator. Her family knew the danger of walking through a darkened house where the furniture had probably been rearranged. She was a long time member of the Baptist Church, Shelby Co. Home Extension, and many other organizations. She and Bob were charter members of the Gourmet Club, a group of lifelong friends. Shirley was best known to some as the owner of "This Old House" craft store. She enjoyed traveling and spending time with friends.

Surviving are her children, Gary Largent (Lori) of Fenton, MO, Gini Smith (Dave) of Decatur, IL, David Largent (Cindy) of Midlothian, TX and Diane Winterboer (Mike) of Lebanon, OR; brother, Eugene Dowler (Eileen) of Hillsboro, MO; sister, Delores Crutcher (Elwood) of Shelbyville; and grandchildren, Daniel Smith (Lindsey), Stephanie Smith, Adam Largent, Jessica Largent, Samuel Largent, and Stephen Largent.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and husbands, Bob Largent and Jim Tate.

The family would like to thank her doctors and caregivers from St Anthony’s Hospital in Effingham, Dr. Imburgia, Dr. Dy, Cancer Care Specialists, staff of Primrose Retirement Community, Imboden Creek Gardens staff, and the many people who supported us with prayers and visits.
