Suzanne V. Drake
(November 11, 1933 - November 21, 2014)
Suzanne V. Drake transitioned to her eternal home on November 21, 2014. She was the daughter of Orville and Ruby Price Eversole of Shelby County, IL, born November 11, 1933.
She is survived by her husband, Thelbert L. Drake of Springfield, IL; sisters, Hazel Rueff of Shelbyville, IL and Carolyn Aspling and husband LaVerne of Bradenton, FL; sisters-in-law, Norma Eversole and Ermajean Eversole both of Shelbyville, IL; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, William Paul Eversole and David Eugene Eversole.
Suzanne graduated from Shelbyville High School in the Class of 1951, received her Baccalaureate degree magna cum laude from Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC in 1955, earned the Master’s degree from Michigan State University in 1959, and the Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut in 1974. She was a member of the National Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi and Academic Honor Society.
Dr. Drake held teaching positions in Illinois and Michigan and was director of reading programs for districts in Illinois and Connecticut. She held professorial positions at Northern Illinois University and retired Professor Emerita from Ball State University. She also served as a facilitator and author of graduate courses for Indiana Wesleyan University.
She was the director/advisor of several doctoral students who now serve as professors throughout the Midwest, Indonesia, Singapore and Florida. Two of her students serve as Deans of Education in Florida and in Arkansas.
Dr. Drake authored several articles in professional journals, two chapters in a graduate text book and served on editorial boards for professional publications.
She contributed in teaching, music and leadership in several churches. She was a founding member of the Storrs (CT) Community Church. She served as president of the Storrs Chapter of the American Association of University Women.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 26, 2014 in Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, IL with Rev. Dan Seibert officiating.
