David Blake Bernstein, 68, of Findlay, IL, passed away at home on Thursday, December 11, 2025, leaving a legacy of hard work, warmth and strength.
David was born on February 16, 1957, the son of Betty Jane Nichols and Lonnie Samuel Bernstein. David graduated from Findlay High School in the Class of 1976. He married his high school sweetheart, Julie Messmore, on November 6, 1976. David owned and operated B&C Painting for many years. He spent his life working as a painter and acquired many friends through his profession. Those who knew him often said he was a great guy, and they meant it. He enjoyed fishing, campfires, and sledding with his grandchildren at the Turnip Farm.
David is survived by his loving wife, Julie; children, Wyatt Bernstein and Letitia of Bethany, IL, Trevor Bernstein of Findlay, IL, and Rachel Bernstein of Findlay, IL. He was a proud grandfather to Trey Hall, Cannon Bernstein, Kinzley Bernstein, and Talon Bernstein. He is also survived by his five siblings, Terri Matlock of Venice, FL, Susan Bass (Jim) of Normal, IL, Elizabeth Bernstein (Wes Shackelford) of Lawrenceville, GA, Jill Cohen (Isaac) of Chicago, IL, and Brad Bernstein of Chicago, IL; and sister-in-law, Jane Messmore of Findlay, IL.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
David’s life was founded on love for his family and the simple moments that made each day meaningful. He will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Burial at Findlay Cemetery and a celebration of David’s life will be held at a later date. Memorials may be given to the ALS Association or Clarence Bixler American Legion Post #409 in Findlay and mailed to Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, 415 North Broadway, Shelbyville, IL 62565.
