Janet S. Herron

Janet Sue (Parr) Herron, 95, of Shelbyville, IL, passed away at 7:47 a.m. Friday, July 17, 2026, in Glenwood Supportive Living, Mt. Zion, IL.

Funeral services will be held at noon on July 30, 2026, at Shelbyville First United Methodist Church, Shelbyville, IL, with Pastor Michael Madden officiating. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. – noon Thursday in the church. Burial will be in Findlay Cemetery, Findlay, IL. Memorials may be given to the Shelbyville First United Methodist Church. 

Janet was born on December 13, 1930, in Findlay, IL, the daughter of Percy and Ruby (Dunaway) Parr. She attended Bud Ward Elementary School for eight years and graduated from Findlay High School in the Class of 1948. During her teenage years, she had jobs babysitting, mowing yards, and working at a restaurant. After graduating from high school, Janet was employed as Secretary of the Findlay Illinois Unit Schools, leaving there to marry Don Eugene Herron on June 26, 1949, in the Findlay Methodist Church. Don and Janet moved to Bloomington, IL, where she worked for Spiegel Catalog Office and Admiral Radio. She continued her studies at Southern Illinois University Adult Education in Carbondale, IL, and Shawnee Jr. College in Ullin, IL. In 1966, Janet began her employment for the State of Illinois at Anna Mental Health Center in Anna, IL. In 1988, Janet and Don moved from Vienna to Shelbyville, and Janet began working at Adolf Meyer Mental Health Center in Decatur, IL. She worked in Decatur until transferring to the Illinois Department of Public Aid in Shelbyville, IL, retiring from this office in December of 1999. After her retirement, Janet kept busy volunteering at the Shelby County Courthouse, Shelby County Animal Control, First United Methodist Church Food Pantry, as a “Pen Pal” at the local schools, and helping her daughters at Del’s Popcorn Shop in Mt. Zion, IL at Christmastime. She enjoyed crocheting and sewing and was an active member of the Shelbyville First United Methodist Church.

Janet is survived by her three daughters, Donna Bertsch and husband Steve of Decatur, IL; Trudy Jacobs and husband Michael of Hernando, FL, and Susan Shockley and husband Michael of Lewes, DE; sister, Joan Herron and husband Forest “Frosty” of Findlay, IL; eight grandchildren, Jason Bertsch of Potter Valley, CA, Julie Quinlan (Justin) of Mt. Zion, IL, Dustin Jacobs of Delray Beach FL, Tyler Jacobs (Robyn) of West Lake, FL, Zachary Jacobs (Anggie) of Tampa, FL, Kelsey Stitt of St. Petersburg, FL, Savannah Shockley of Flagler Beach, FL, and Donavan Shockley of Lewes, DE; and seven great grandchildren, Jamisyn Quinlan, Cameron Jacobs, Adelyn Jacobs, Charlotte Jacobs, Penelope Jacobs, Phoenix Stitt, and Xavier Stitt.

Janet was preceded in death by her parents; husband Don on December 28, 1999; and sisters, Rosemary Winings and Betty Clausen (Cecil).
