Lyle E. Lieb, age 71, of Metropolis, Illinois formerly of Mode, Illinois and Shelbyville, Illinois passed away on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, at his residence.
A Celebration of Life with military rites will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 7, 2025, at Aikins-Farmer-Loftus-McManus Funeral Home with Dan Haun and Harvey Baxter officiating. Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 7, 2025, from 2 pm to 4 pm at Aikins-Farmer-Loftus-McManus Funeral Home. Following the services in Metropolis, there will be a local visitation on Friday, August 8, 2025, from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, 415 N. Broadway, Shelbyville, IL 62565. Immediately after the visitation on Friday, a graveside service will be held at 4:00 p.m. in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville, IL, with Father Pawel Augustyniak officiating. Lyle was the youngest son of Louis C. “Jim” Lieb and Maurine (Kantner) Lieb. Lyle was born on September 29, 1953, in Shelbyville, IL. He started school at Clarksburg, IL and graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1971. He moved to Metropolis IL in 2003.
In his youth, Lyle was a member of the Ful-O-Pep 4-H Club and enjoyed showing at the county fair and playing on the baseball team. As a teenager, Lyle worked in the hay field putting up a lot of bales. He always wore cutoff jeans and went barefoot.
He earned an associate degree at Lake Land College. Lyle took classes at Eastern Illinois University, while washing dishes to pay for them, earning a Governor’s Degree. He worked on a farm near Marshall, Illinois for ten years and sorted mail at Lambert Airport in St. Louis. Lyle was chosen to carry the Olympic Torch when it passed through southern Illinois. He joined the American Legion and was a lifetime member having served for 43 years. After moving to Metropolis, he was a member of the American Legion Post #306 and served as Post Adjutant for 17 years.
Lyle leaves behind two sisters, Linda Lieb Lister (Bill) of Beecher City, IL and Cindy Lieb Marquardt of Rhinelander, WI; brother, Larry Lieb of Mode, IL; two nephews, Mike Lieb (Kerri) of Bath, NY and Joshua Lister of Beecher City, IL; and four nieces, Dianna Reid (Ray) of Reno, NV, Tammie Martin of Stewardson, IL, Laurie Lilly (Kaleb) of Overland Park, KS, and Lexi Limes of Shumway, IL.
Lyle was preceded in death by his parents, Louis C. “Jim” and Maurine Lucille (Kantner) Lieb; and two nephews, Charles Edward Lister and Morris “Butch” Klein.
