Scott L. West, 69, of Lakewood, IL, went to be with his Heavenly Father, surrounded by his wife and children at 7:15 a.m. Friday, April 24, 2026, in Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center, Mattoon, IL.
A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 30, 2026, at New Hope Church, Shelbyville, IL, with Pastor Darin Hansen officiating. In recognition of Scott’s dedication to the planning of the new grade school, memorials may be given to Shelbyville Community School District #4 for playground equipment at the new grade school. The family will gather for a private burial in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville, IL. Arrangements are by Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, IL.
Scott was born on April 15, 1957, in Shelbyville, IL, the son of Vernell Verl and Joan May Chenoweth West. He graduated from Shelbyville High School in the Class of 1975 and studied architecture at Lake Land College. Scott married Tina L. Evans on March 30, 1980. He was a lifelong farmer in the Lakewood area. When Scott wasn’t farming, he was pursuing his passion for construction. He worked for several area contractors, designed and built homes, inspected homes, and was a skilled custom woodworker. Scott was a member of the Shelby County Farm Bureau and First Christian Church of Cowden, IL. Scott was very strong in his faith and enjoyed teaching Sunday school and reading his Bible. He was a member of the Shelbyville School Board from November 1995 – present and was currently serving as Vice-President.
Scott really loved the days when everyone was together. Nothing fancy, just being around family, laughing, and enjoying the moment. At the end of those days, he’d say, “That was a good day.” That pretty much says everything about him. He loved his family deeply, lived his faith every day, and was someone you could always count on.
Scott is survived by his wife, Tina; children, Brooke Hammond (Jake) of Lakewood, IL, Jeremy West (Courtney) of Shelbyville, IL, Caleb West (Maria) of Shelbyville, IL, and Rachel Steffen (Wyatt) of Altamont, IL; mother, Joan West of Shelbyville, IL: brother, Roger West (Linda) of Shelbyville, IL; sisters, Lori Gronek (Dave) of Des Moines, IA and Gail West (family friend, Beth Butler) of Marion, IL; and nine grandchildren: Myles, Amelia, and Whyatt Hammond; Hazel and June Atkins, Rose and Miriam West; Lincoln and Nolan Steffen.
He was preceded in death by his father, Vernell West; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Charles and Charlotte Evans.
