Thomas Louis Rood, 74, of Shelbyville, IL, passed away at 2:13 pm, Monday, September 7, 2026, at home surrounded by family.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 12, 2026, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Shelbyville, IL, with Father Pawel Augustyniak as Celebrant. Visitation will be from 5:00 -7:00 pm Friday, September 11th at Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, IL. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville, IL. Memorials may be given to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church or Main Street School/Library Reading Program.
Tom was born on September 26, 1951, in Highland, IL, the son of James Esau and Alma Felicitas (Capelle) Rood. He grew up in Troy, IL, graduating from TRIAD High School. At a young age, Tom became fascinated with birds, leading to 64 years of breeding, showing, and judging birds. Tom continued his education at Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. He later earned his master’s degree from Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. Tom married Jane Marie Gilomen on April 23, 1971, and they were blessed with 55 years of marriage and two children, Lori and Thomas. Tom served the Shelbyville community for 34 years as a beloved elementary school teacher. Tom loved his family and enjoyed writing books for his grandchildren. He was also a talented art creator and collector. Tom found joy in traveling, reading, and watching the St. Louis Cardinals. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Shelbyville.
Tom is survived by his wife, Jane; son, Thomas J. Rood and wife Dana of Oreana, IL; daughter, Lori Goodman and husband Aaron of Monticello, IL; brothers, James Rood and wife Shirley and Robert Rood and wife Pam all of Troy, IL; and four grandchildren, Katherine Goodman, Tyson Rood and wife Caitlyn, Holly Rood and Kylie Rood.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
