Trenouth “Dwight” Phares, 99, of Shelbyville, IL, passed away at 4:12 p.m. Monday, May 11, 2026, at Sunrise Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, in Virden, IL.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 15, 2026, at Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, IL, with Rev. Betzy Elifrits Warren officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. Friday in the funeral home. Burial with military rites by the Shelby County Honor Guard will be in Linwood Cemetery, Pana, IL. Memorials may be given to the Findlay United Methodist Church, Findlay, IL.
Mr. Phares was born on December 31, 1926, in Moweaqua, IL, the son of Orrin and Hester (McPeek) Phares. He graduated from Taylorville High School in the Class of 1944. Dwight was a U.S. Navy veteran of WW II. When he returned from the service, he worked as a crane operator for Operating Engineers #965 of Springfield, IL. Dwight was a member of the Findlay United Methodist Church, Roy Vanderpool American Legion Post #81 of Shelbyville and Operating Engineers #965 of Springfield. He enjoyed building model airplanes and was an avid gardener and a skilled woodworker. Dwight married Delores Woolard Dunaway in 1980.
He is survived by his sons, Ronald Dwight “Ron” Phares (Debbie) of Springfield, IL and Lawrence “Larry” Phares (Laureen) of Arizona; stepson, David Dunaway (Sandra) of Normal, IL; son-in-law, Bill Luttrell of Woodstock, IL; eight grandchildren; and several great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Delores Phares; daughter, Carolyn Sue Luttrell; stepdaughter, Debbie Reid (Brad); brother, John A. Phares; and sisters, Betty Boils and Ethel Marie Fesser.
